Accustomed to an heir-and-spare dynamic with her elder sister, June, who got a full scholarship to Columbia and a hedge fund job, Jayne’s existential insecurity crystallizes upon learning the shocking news that June has cancer. Jayne’s perfectionist streak combines with her hunger for acceptance and affirmation, feeding into obsessive, compulsive-and ultimately self-destructive-behaviors, including hookups and rituals of bulimia, all providing only the illusion of control. (I do not, on the other hand, recommend the Bloomsday Irish breakfast of kidneys and gizzards, which is positively Cronenberg-esque.) Perhaps that breakfast is a good metaphor some people, not happy with saying "Ulysses" is not to their taste, must pronounce it loathsome. While Bloomsday events outside of Dublin tend to be nerdy affairs in Edwardian dress, I do recommend a good public reading if you can find one. Joyce's devoted fans can be seen celebrating it every year. Today, June 16th, is Bloomsday, the day in which all of the action of "Ulysses" takes place in the spinning clockwork of Dublin in 1904. Given the flood of ecstatic imagination between the covers of James Joyce's novel, its more patient readers are marked for life by having read it. This was meant in a silly, snobbish kind of way, but he was right. Those that have read "Ulysses" and those that haven't,” my best friend stated plumply one day, dropping the surprisingly compact 783-page paperback on the table with a thud. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Complete shakespeareIt has been organized into Histories (including the poems and sonnets), Comedies, and Tragedies, with the plays grouped in chronological order in each volume.Īttractively bound, with gold stamping on front and spine, and beautifully designed, these handsome volumes will undoubtably become a treasure for lovers of Shakespeare throughout the English-speaking world. It contains all the innovative features of the original, including a lucid General Introduction by Stanley Wells, and brief introductions to each work. The Complete Oxford Shakespeare divides this excellent book into three handy volumes. technically, these are just Shakespeares plays: his Complete Works also include sonnets and long-form poems so perhaps the title of this show is a tiny. The result of the most fundamental rethinking of the text and presentation of Shakespeare's works ever undertaken, it offered many remarkable innovations features, including a new chronological order, revised stage directions, modern spelling and punctuation, and two full versions of King Lear-as originally written and as revised later for performance. Hailed in The Washington Post Book World as "a definitive synthesis of the best editions of recent decades," the massive one-volume Oxford Shakespeare was based on eight years of full-time research by a team of distinguished British and American scholars. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Born at midnight by cc hunterLucas has always made Kylie’s insides melt-unfortunately, he wants nothing to do with her.
